Many women experience gynecologic conditions. Some need medication, while others need gynecologic surgery.
Gynecologic surgery can help treat issues coming from the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, or cervix. Many women ask the same question before surgery about recovery time.
Recovery time depends on the type of surgery, your health and how your body heals.
At Precision OBGYN, we support patients with clear answers.
Below, we explain typical recovery timelines so you can know what to expect.
Types of Gynecologic Surgery
There are small surgeries (also known as minor surgery) and bigger surgeries (AKA major surgery). In addition there is a difference between invasive surgery which involves an open incision on the body versus minimally invasive surgery which typically happens through small 5mm to 1 centimeter incisions on the abdomen or through the vagina.
Gynecolgic surgery that is Minimally invasive surgeries and done through the abdomen are known as laparoscopic surgery. These use small incisions. As a result the incisio’ns healing process is usually quick.
Other surgeries require a more extensive incision on the belly. This is called open surgery. Such surgeries can become slower in healing.
Some surgeries done to treat common gynecologic disorders include:
- Hysterectomy (Removal of the uterus plus or minus the cervix)
- ovarian cystectomy (Ovarian cyst removal)
- Myomectomy (Fibroid removal)
- Endometriosis surgery
Each surgery has a different healing time.
Recovery after Minor Surgery
Minor surgery often means small cuts. You may go home the same day. Some women feel tired for a few days. Mild pain and swelling are common.
The time to return to work depends on the procedure as well as the patient. 4 procedures that are done through the vagina like hysteroscopy, dilation and curettage, cold knife conization or leaf procedures call patients having these procedures can often return to work the next day or after 48 to 72 hours. After minimally invasive surgery Most women can return to light work in about one week. Major surgery requires a little more time, with an average of two weeks. Some patients may want or need more time. After surgery, Heavy is not allowed for up to 6 weeks. A restriction of weight limit of 10-15lbs is usually in effect. Your doctor will tell you when it is safe.
You may feel:
- Tired
- Sore
- Mildly bloated
- Mood changes can also be seen
These feelings are normal. Your body is working hard to heal.
Recovery after Major Surgery
Major surgery, like a hysterectomy needs more healing time. You may stay in the hospital for a few days.
Full recovery may take six to eight weeks. Some women may need even more time although they can still function throughout their usual day.
During this time:
- Rest is very important
- Do not lift heavy things
- Avoid hard exercise
- Follow your doctor’s advice
It is okay to move slowly around your home. Walking helps blood flow and healing.
At Precision OBGYN, we guide you through your options to determine the best surgical approach based on medical need to have your procedure.
The First Week after Surgery
The first week is often the hardest. You may feel pain, tiredness, and low energy. Pain medicine can help. Take it as your doctor tells you.
You may need help at home. Ask a family member or friend to stay with you. Simple tasks like cooking or cleaning may feel hard.
Try to:
- Sleep well
- Drink plenty of water
- Eat healthy food
- Keep your wound clean
- Your body needs care and kindness.
Weeks Two to Four
During this time, many women start to feel better. Pain lessens. Energy slowly comes back.
You may walk more each day. But do not rush. Healing takes time inside your body, too.
Some women feel emotional changes. You may feel sad or moody. Talk to your doctor if these feelings worry you.
When Can You Go Back to Work?
This depends on your job and your surgery.
If you have a desk job, you may return in a few days after minor surgery. For major surgery, you may need 2 weeks or more depending on how you feel.
If your job includes lifting or standing for long hours, you may need more time.
Always ask your doctor before going back to work.
When Is It Safe to Exercise?
Light walking is good soon after surgery. Usually the same day. It helps your body stay strong and prevents the formation of blood clots.
Heavy exercise should be avoided. Running, gym workouts, or lifting weights should only start when your doctor says it is safe.
Listen to your body. If something hurts, stop.
At Precision OBGYN, we provide clear instructions so patients know when to walk, rest and resume normal activities.
When Can You Drive?
Most women can drive again when:
- They are not taking narcotics for pain
- They can move easily without pain
- They can stop the car quickly if needed
This is often after one to two weeks for minor surgery. It may take longer after major surgery.
